Choose by your main activity, not the word “warm”
| Base | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Oahu / Honolulu | Beach-oriented downtime and community lights | Winter rain and ocean conditions; flight length varies by origin |
| Orlando | Theme parks and bookable holiday entertainment | Tickets and transfers structure the day |
| Anaheim | Disneyland as the main purpose | Park admission and booking conditions; cool evenings |
| San Diego | City, park and coast with a seasonal outing | December Nights is only December 4–5 |
Oahu is the strongest fit here if outdoor relaxation and ocean-side time are the central reason for traveling, with Christmas festivities added to a slower stay. That does not promise safe swimming at every beach or sunshine every day. Orlando suits a family that considers rides, characters and organized seasonal entertainment worth the ticket cost. It is an inland theme-park region, not a beach holiday with a few rides attached.
Southern California needs a second decision. Anaheim is the practical anchor for Disneyland; San Diego works for a more varied city, park and coastal itinerary. They are separate destinations, not two adjacent neighborhoods. If both matter, allow for changing bases or a deliberate travel day rather than imagining a relaxed daily commute between them.
These recommendations compare purpose, transport effort, booking dependence and weather exposure. They are not ratings of happiness, popularity or guaranteed value. Start with the needs of the least flexible traveler in your group: an early bedtime, mobility needs, a fixed school break or a limited tolerance for long journeys can make the choice clearer than a list of attractions.
The 2026 events that can decide your dates
As checked October 18, Honolulu City Lights announces opening night on December 5, 2026. The organizer describes a free community event at Honolulu Hale. If the lights are essential, do not plan an early-December departure before opening and assume the display will already be operating. Its general hours need checking against the current event notice because different parts of the site distinguish grounds access and overnight lighting.
At Walt Disney World, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party takes place on selected nights from November 8 through December 22, 2026. This is a date-specific paid event, not a promise that the same party runs on Christmas Day. Disneyland Resort's holiday season is announced for November 13, 2026 through January 6, 2027. The season dates do not guarantee every performance on every visit.
San Diego's Balboa Park December Nights is a two-day event: December 4 and 5, 2026. It is a useful reason for an early-December stay, but it cannot be an activity for a December 24–26 itinerary. If your travel dates are fixed, remove events that do not overlap before comparing accommodation. This simple step prevents buying a trip around an unavailable experience.
Oahu: make Christmas an evening within a slower stay
A useful Oahu rhythm is a gentle arrival day, an outdoor day chosen around conditions, and a separate Honolulu City Lights evening. Stay near the activities you expect to repeat rather than selecting accommodation solely from a low room price. If most days center on Waikiki and Honolulu, compare the cost of specific trips with keeping a rental car parked throughout the stay. If your plans involve several parts of the island, the calculation changes.
For the lights outing, eat before the busiest part of your evening, check transport to Honolulu Hale and allow for opening-night road closures if that is your chosen date. A free event still has transport, food and possible parking costs. Do not plan the parade evening with the same assumptions as an ordinary night later in the season. The event address is Honolulu Hale, 530 South King Street, not a generic Waikiki hotel location.
Protect some unbooked daytime. A weather change may make a museum, a neighborhood meal or a shorter walk more attractive than the beach plan. Avoid turning the island into a checklist of distant viewpoints between two evening reservations. The value of choosing Oahu in this comparison is room to slow down while enjoying a different seasonal setting, not a guarantee that every day can be spent swimming.
Orlando: decide which ticket is worth building a day around
Pick the holiday experience before buying a broad collection of tickets. The official 2026 Christmas Party page lists selected-night adult prices of $189–$229 plus tax, varying by date, with separate child pricing. This is a party ticket, not an estimate for a whole Orlando vacation. The same page says event ticketholders may enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4pm (16:00) on their valid date without an additional daytime park ticket or reservation for that entry. Check the current purchase conditions before paying.
That distinction can change the day. A relaxed morning and late-afternoon arrival may suit a party-focused visit better than buying an additional full park day and expecting children to stay energetic until midnight. If rides are more important than the party program, compare an ordinary park day instead. Choose what the group will actually use; a longer opening window is not automatically a better experience.
Leave a lower-intensity day between major park days when your stay permits. Orlando also has seasonal outings beyond the parks; the tourism board lists free and paid events, including downtown options. Verify the individual venue's operating dates before treating one as your fallback. Transport between a hotel, a park and a separate evening event can be a significant part of the day, so avoid stacking attractions simply because they all appear under “Orlando.”
Southern California: choose Anaheim or San Diego as the base
For a Disneyland-focused trip, start by comparing Anaheim accommodation and the actual route to the resort entrance. A property described as nearby may still involve a shuttle, parking or a longer walk than your group wants after dark. Check the ticket and reservation requirements for your party and dates, then decide whether the second day should be another park day or a slower local outing. Holiday entertainment may be affected by weather or operating changes.
San Diego is the better fit within this comparison when you want the coast and city attractions to carry the holiday, with a festival as one addition. December Nights offers a free event in Balboa Park on December 4–5, but food, shopping and transport remain separate costs. Plan the return before arriving, especially if attending a major evening event with children. A later Christmas-week trip needs a different confirmed seasonal activity or can simply be a city-and-coast stay.
Combining Anaheim and San Diego can work on a longer holiday. Treat the transfer as a real component of the itinerary, including luggage, check-out, check-in and traffic uncertainty. Do not put a prepaid evening activity immediately after the move. If you have only a few nights, one base usually gives you more usable leisure time than an ambitious list spread across Southern California.
What “mild weather” can and cannot tell you
Hawaii's tourism board describes a general sea-level winter daytime average of about 78°F, or 25.6°C, and identifies November through March as the wetter months. This is broad climate guidance across the islands, not a Honolulu station normal for a particular December and certainly not a forecast for your holiday. It supports planning for lighter daytime clothing with rain protection and layers, while leaving daily outdoor choices flexible.
Winter ocean conditions require a separate decision from air temperature. Large north-shore swells and strong currents can make a beach unsuitable even on a pleasant day. Follow posted warnings and lifeguard advice; a calm-looking photograph is not evidence that conditions are safe when you arrive. If ocean activities are important, have an alternative day rather than forcing them into one non-changeable slot.
Orlando and coastal Southern California should also be planned with cool evenings and variable conditions in mind. We do not present unverified numeric temperature averages for them. Pack a useful outer layer for evening shows and waiting, check a short-range forecast before departure, and distinguish “less winter cold” from a trip built entirely around swimming. Choose accommodation and indoor alternatives that you would still enjoy during a cooler spell.
Compare the entire holiday cost
Use the same categories for every destination: flights, checked luggage if needed, lodging with mandatory charges and taxes, airport transfers, daily transport, meals, tickets and any paid extras. Compare similar room arrangements and cancellation terms. A destination with free lights may still have an expensive flight and hotel; a park trip with costly admission may be worthwhile if the park is the reason everyone wants to travel.
For a rental car, include parking at accommodation and attractions as well as fuel, insurance terms and child-seat needs. For a car-free stay, price the real airport and evening journeys rather than assuming every hotel provides a useful shuttle. Verify shuttle destinations, times and reservation conditions directly. A free shuttle that stops running before your event ends does not solve the return.
Holiday dates can affect availability and price in all three regions. This guide does not claim a cheapest week or a dependable hotel rate. Obtain current totals for your actual party, then preserve a contingency for meals or transport changes. Avoid booking several nonrefundable events on the assumption that warmer geography eliminates weather disruption.
Three manageable ways to structure a short stay
For Oahu, a three-part plan could be arrival and local orientation, an outdoor day chosen around conditions, then a Honolulu outing with City Lights on an operating evening. For Orlando, use arrival and a simple meal, one main park or party day, then a lower-intensity day before deciding on another major ticket. For Southern California, choose an Anaheim park-centered stay or a San Diego city-and-coast stay; add the other base only when the number of nights supports it.
These are pacing examples, not guaranteed three-day holidays from every origin. Flight duration, connections, time zones and arrival fatigue differ, especially for international visitors. Count usable local days rather than nights shown on a booking. A late arrival and early departure can turn a nominal three-night stay into only two full days.
Before booking, ask whether the trip still makes sense if the featured evening is shortened or one outdoor activity is cancelled. If the answer is yes because you also want the destination itself, you have a stronger plan. If the entire holiday depends on one party, parade or festival, check its exact date, availability and change conditions before committing to travel.
For a community celebration within an Oahu stay

The event is a reason to visit central Honolulu after dark, separate from a beach day. Its December 5 opening is confirmed for 2026; check the operating details for your specific night.
Keep opening-night crowds and road closures distinct from an ordinary later visit. Historical parade footage helps show the atmosphere but does not establish this year’s route, participants or schedule.
For travelers who want a ticketed Christmas party

The Christmas Party runs on selected nights and finishes its announced 2026 season before December 25. Buy the date and experience you want, with a realistic plan for tired children and the return to your hotel.
A daytime park ticket, a party ticket and other resort experiences have different conditions. Read the actual product rather than treating every Disney purchase as equivalent access.
For a holiday built around the parks

The announced seasonal period extends from November 13 to January 6, but particular entertainment and access conditions still need checking. Make the resort the center of the day if that is what your party values.
Old photographs of the decorated castle are useful historical views, not proof that the same lighting or show will appear on your chosen evening.
For an early-December festival and a wider city stay

December Nights takes place December 4–5, 2026. Visitors arriving later should choose San Diego for the broader trip rather than assume this named festival continues all month.
Give the park outing its own transport plan. If you are also visiting Anaheim, keep the intercity transfer separate from the festival evening.
Which destination is warmest?
Oahu is the beach-oriented choice in this comparison, but no destination guarantees warmth or safe swimming. The Hawaii figure quoted is broad sea-level winter guidance, not a forecast or a comparable set of city station normals.
Is Orlando suitable if we do not want theme parks?
There are other seasonal activities, but compare the wider trip carefully. If parks are not an interest, Oahu or a San Diego city-and-coast stay may better match the purpose described here.
Does the Magic Kingdom Christmas Party run on December 25?
The announced 2026 party dates end December 22. Other park holiday offerings are separate; do not assume they reproduce the ticketed party.
Can we visit December Nights during Christmas week?
No. San Diego’s published 2026 December Nights dates are December 4 and 5.
Do we need a car?
It depends on the base and activities. Compare exact airport and evening journeys, parking and shuttle limits; there is no single answer covering Honolulu, Orlando, Anaheim and San Diego.
Can Anaheim and San Diego fit into three days?
A transfer is possible, but it consumes useful time and adds luggage and traffic planning. For a short stay, choose the base that matches your main interest and add the second only with sufficient nights.
