NASA’s Black Marble combines observations of light at night captured by the VIIRS sensor aboard Suomi NPP. This map uses a compressed version of the 2016 global colour composite.
Observations from multiple nights are combined; this is not a single moment in time. The brightness control only changes the display. Light intensity is not a direct measurement of population or energy use. This view is not detailed enough to inspect individual buildings or streets.
