King’s Cross Station: the real departure point behind Platform 9¾
King’s Cross is the films’ London departure point for the Hogwarts Express and one of the clearest examples of a real transport setting becoming part of the story’s visual language. The first platform sequence was filmed around platforms 4 and 5. That detail is more useful than simply searching for a place labelled Platform 9¾, because the numbered platform in the story is fictional.
The familiar trolley adds another layer. Today’s trolley photo point is a visitor installation on the concourse, not the exact camera position used for the filmed platform sequence. Keeping those two things separate prevents a common identity mistake: confusing a fan-oriented feature with the precise location seen in the film.
King’s Cross also differs from the map’s heritage and landscape Places because it remains a working transport hub first. Its screen significance is embedded in an active station rather than preserved as a dedicated film set. Choose it to explore the contrast between fictional railway mythology, real platforms and a later visitor installation, and confirm current conditions before visiting.
