Choose a city walk or a closer look at domestic life
Pompeii suits a visitor who wants to connect public buildings, streets and residential quarters into a city-sized picture. Herculaneum offers a more concentrated view of surviving buildings, including upper-storey elements and exceptional preservation of organic material. Those differences are supported by UNESCO; our recommendation is an editorial match to your purpose, not a visitor-voted ranking.
For planning, reserve a substantial part of the day for Pompeii or a focused half-day outing for Herculaneum, including your transfer. These are flexible editorial allowances, not guaranteed visit durations. Someone who studies individual houses may happily spend much longer at either site. Do not treat a smaller excavated area as proof that every route is easy or step-free.
Winter admission ends earlier than the closing time
For 15 October–15 March, Pompeii lists opening at 09:00, last admission at 15:30 and closure at 17:00. Herculaneum lists 08:30, last admission at 15:30 and gate closure at 17:00, with the archaeological area to be vacated by 16:40. Arriving shortly before the last-admission time leaves little margin for a meaningful visit.
Start with one park and protect its morning or early-afternoon window. Adding the second is optional and depends on your actual departure, transfer and remaining entry window. Do not buy two visits on the assumption that winter hours match summer. Holiday openings and special events require a fresh check on each operator's website.
Compare the ticket product, not just the headline price
At the check date, Pompeii Express is listed at €20 for the ancient city; Pompeii Plus is €25 and adds the specified suburban-villa itinerary. Herculaneum lists a separate standard admission of €16. These are published base adult prices, not a promise of the final checkout total or eligibility for a concession. Confirm booking fees and the exact product before paying.
The UNESCO designation groups Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata, but it does not create one interchangeable entrance or admission ticket. Pompeii's Herculaneum Gate is a gate within Pompeii, not an entrance to the separate Herculaneum archaeological park. Follow the operator's official purchase link rather than assuming a search advertisement is the park's own ticket office.
Use the map for orientation, then check the correct entrance
The existing AnyMappy Place represents the combined UNESCO property. Its single pin cannot locate all the separate entrances. Use the linked park information for the final approach. Herculaneum's operator directs rail visitors to Ercolano Scavi and onward to Corso Resina 187; check current train service and your walking route before travel.
Both visits include outdoor archaeological terrain. Neither is a guaranteed rainy-day indoor attraction. Choose footwear for uneven surfaces and keep weather flexibility. Herculaneum publishes an accessible route and asks visitors to consult entrance staff; Pompeii also publishes a dedicated accessible itinerary. If step-free access matters, confirm the appropriate gate and current usable sections directly instead of choosing from site size alone.

Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata
Pompeii and Herculaneum belong to one UNESCO listing alongside Torre Annunziata, but their visitor experiences remain distinct. Use this shared Place as a starting point for comparing locations in the Naples area, then open the relevant official park directions. A heritage boundary and a ticketed visitor entrance answer different questions. The photograph in the article shows Pompeii's Forum in 2008; it is an archival view, not live access or crowd information.
At Pompeii, let the relationship between streets and public spaces guide your choice of route. At Herculaneum, allow time to examine building scale and surviving domestic features. Individual houses or sections can close for conservation, so a photographed interior or well-known building should not be treated as guaranteed access. Keep one main priority and leave room to shorten or extend the visit on the day.

Which is better for a first visit?
Choose Pompeii for the scale of an ancient city, or Herculaneum for a more concentrated focus on buildings and domestic detail. This is a purpose-based recommendation, not a universal ranking.
Can I see both in one winter day?
It may fit some itineraries, but both list last admission at 15:30. Prioritise one park and check the actual transfer before committing to the second.
Does a Pompeii ticket include Herculaneum?
Do not assume so. The ordinary products described here are separate; UNESCO membership does not create a shared admission ticket.
Is Herculaneum automatically easier with a wheelchair?
No. A smaller site is not a step-free guarantee. Consult the park's accessible-route information and staff about the entrance and available sections.
