Durham Cathedral: cloisters, snow and McGonagall’s classroom
Durham Cathedral is one of the map’s early Hogwarts locations, appearing in the first two films. Its cloisters were used for courtyard and corridor scenes, giving the cathedral a different screen role from Alnwick’s open castle spaces and Gloucester’s fan-vaulted cloister. The architecture is not standing in for one single room: the same broad cathedral setting supports several kinds of Hogwarts movement and activity.
The cloister garth is especially recognisable from Hedwig’s flight in the snow and Ron’s slug spell. The Chapter House supplies another precise identity, serving as Professor McGonagall’s classroom. Keeping these areas together under the existing cathedral Place makes the map easier to use while still directing attention to the relevant screen spaces.
Durham is useful for viewers comparing multiple versions of Hogwarts corridors and classrooms. Its first-two-film connection also sets it apart from Gloucester, whose Great Cloister was used in the first, second and sixth films. The cathedral remains a functioning historic Place, so current visiting arrangements and any area-specific access information should be confirmed before travel.
