Hakata for one stop, Tenjin for a choice of nearby settings
Choose Hakata when you arrive by train, stay near the station or want to add a market to an otherwise busy day. The exact destination is the forecourt on the Hakata-exit side, not the Chikushi exit on the opposite side. Once luggage and onward travel are sorted, you can concentrate on one place instead of turning the evening into a cross-city collection.
Choose the Tenjin side when you have time to compare settings: the City Hall’s west Fureai Square, the park beside ACROS Fukuoka, and the forecourt of the historic Kihinkan. The latter two are not alternative names for the City Hall venue. Their different surroundings make a short sequence worthwhile, but you still do not need to buy food at every stop.
This is a selection of four precise venues from the larger Christmas Advent programme. It is not a claim that Fukuoka has only four sites. The selection favours useful geographic combinations and verified access, rather than an unsupported ranking of the busiest, best or most photogenic venue.
| Venue | Best fit | Planning constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Hakata Station, Hakata exit | Arrival day, rail departure or one short stop | 7 November–25 December; weekdays from 16:00 |
| City Hall west Fureai Square | A longer Tenjin market visit | 14 November–26 December; closed 28–29 November |
| Tenjin Central Park | Park setting beside ACROS Fukuoka | 12 November–25 December; food until 22:00 |
| Kihinkan forecourt | Historical-building backdrop by Nishinakasu | 11 November–25 December; outdoor venue, not house admission |
Christmas Advent — Hakata Station forecourt
The market is outside JR Hakata Station on the Hakata-guchi side, not the Chikushi-guchi side. It suits a short arrival-day stop after leaving luggage; keep station paths clear and use this venue’s own opening hours.
Use JR Hakata Station’s Hakata-guchi exit; the market is directly on the station forecourt. Subway arrivals can follow signs for Hakata-guchi.
November 7–December 25, 2026. Weekdays 16:00–23:00; weekends and holidays 12:00–23:00. November 7 opens at 16:00; December 24–25 at noon. Entry is free; food and purchases cost extra.
Use your date to remove places before planning the walk
Hakata starts on 7 November 2026, Kihinkan on 11 November, Tenjin Central Park on 12 November and the City Hall square on 14 November. For these selected venues, 7–10 November therefore means a Hakata-market evening; do not assume that all the Tenjin stalls are open because the city-wide season has begun. On 11 November, Kihinkan joins; on 12–13 November, the park also becomes an option.
The City Hall venue is announced closed on 28 and 29 November. A Tenjin evening on those dates should be built around the park and Kihinkan, not a plan that relies on the City Hall market. Check the organiser again before travelling in case the announced schedule changes. A closure at this one square does not automatically close the other venues.
At the other end, Hakata, the park and Kihinkan end on 25 December, while the City Hall venue is scheduled through 26 December. A 26 December visit needs a different plan from Christmas Eve. These distinctions are more useful than one broad label saying that Fukuoka is open for Christmas.
Christmas Advent — Tenjin City Hall plaza
Visit the Fureai Plaza on the west side of Fukuoka City Hall for the Tenjin Christmas Advent venue. Its calendar differs from Hakata’s: the official 2026 schedule lists closures on November 28 and 29.

Walk from Tenjin-minami subway station to the west side of Fukuoka City Hall; Tenjin and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) are also nearby. Enter Fureai Plaza, not the riverside Kihinkan venue.
November 14–December 26, 2026; closed November 28–29. Weekdays 17:00–23:00, weekends/holidays 12:00–23:00; November 21 closes at 21:30. December 24–25 open at noon.
A Tenjin route that respects the earlier food closing time
For an evening with several stops, consider Kihinkan first, then Tenjin Central Park, then the City Hall square if it is operating that day. Kihinkan’s address is Nishinakasu 6-29 and the destination is the outdoor forecourt. The historic building itself is a separate visit. Central Park is beside ACROS; City Hall’s market is at its west-side square. Save those exact locations before setting off.
This order brings Kihinkan’s historic frontage and the park into the earlier part of the evening, with the City Hall market as a later finish. The two park-side venues stop serving earlier, so eat there first if one of their stalls appeals. On the City Hall closure dates, give Kihinkan and the park more time, then finish with dinner or return to your convenient station.
On weekdays, the selected Tenjin-area markets generally start at 17:00. Arriving earlier leaves time to see the surrounding streets before the stalls open. Tenjin, Tenjin-minami and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) are useful transport anchors; choose the one that connects most easily with your hotel or next journey.
Christmas Advent — Tenjin Central Park
The park venue offers a different outdoor setting from the City Hall forecourt, with ACROS Fukuoka beside the lawn. Combine nearby venues on foot, but use this park’s own food-service hours rather than Hakata’s later closing time.

Tenjin-minami and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) are the nearest listed approaches; Tenjin subway station also serves the park. Head to Tenjin 1-1 and the park beside ACROS, not the City Hall plaza.
November 12–December 25, 2026. Weekdays 17:00–22:00; weekends/holidays 12:00–22:00; last food orders 21:45. Lights remain until midnight. Entry is free.
Lights until midnight do not mean food until midnight
The park and Kihinkan publish market hours ending at 22:00, while their lights continue to midnight. The park’s last food orders are at 21:45. Plan dinner before those cutoffs, then use the later illuminated period for a short stroll or photographs. Check the individual stall’s closing notice when ordering.
Hakata and the City Hall venue generally close at 23:00, with published last orders at 22:45. There are exceptions: Hakata opens at 16:00 on its first day, City Hall closes at 21:30 on 21 November, and the selected main markets have earlier starts on 24 and 25 December than ordinary weekdays. Use the individual venue calendar rather than copying one timetable across the city.
Admission and spending are different decisions. Budget food, drinks and purchases separately, and do not infer a 2026 mug price or payment method from an old video. For a couple comparing two markets, sharing a planned meal at one and making the other a visual stop can be more useful than buying the same type of snack repeatedly just to justify each visit.
Christmas Advent — Kihinkan forecourt
The historic Kihinkan building gives this outdoor Christmas venue a different backdrop from Hakata’s station square. Choose the forecourt on the Nishinakasu side; visiting the historic building inside is a separate activity.

The organiser lists Nakasu-kawabata and Tenjin-minami subway stations as approaches. Use the Kihinkan address, Nishinakasu 6-29, and enter the outdoor forecourt.
November 11–December 25, 2026. Weekdays 17:00–22:00, weekends/holidays 12:00–22:00; lighting until midnight. The outdoor event is free; interior admission follows the building’s own rules.
Arrival-day luggage, children and the actual pictures
At Hakata, finish your luggage arrangements before joining the forecourt crowd and keep the main station movement routes clear. A departure-day visit needs a buffer for retrieving bags and reaching the platform, not just the apparent distance from the Christmas tree to the station. If you want Tenjin as well, treat the transfer as its own part of the evening; it is not included in a short station-side stop.

With children, pick one market for food and one nearby setting for a short look. On the Tenjin side, the park and Kihinkan provide distinct surroundings without requiring a second cross-city journey. Decide which station will be your exit if the group is tired. Park grounds and a historic forecourt are outdoor spaces, so neither guarantees shelter or a seat when needed.
Hakata’s station forecourt gives the evening a broad city backdrop, with the railway building and canopy of lights in the same view. On the Tenjin side, the park offers a more open setting beside ACROS, while Kihinkan places the historic facade behind the festivities. Compare those settings in the photographs and videos: station-scale lights, a park stop or architectural details can each become the visual highlight of a different evening.
Give each stop the time it needs
A short Hakata visit can focus on one food choice, a browse of the stalls and time to look at the station-side lights. Choose the meeting point outside the main through-route before separating to buy food. When the return train is fixed, work backwards from bag collection and the platform, leaving the remaining time for the market rather than assuming the forecourt can absorb every spare minute.
For Tenjin, allow a longer evening if you want all three settings. Use Kihinkan for the historic backdrop, Central Park for a park atmosphere and City Hall for the final market stop on an operating date. A useful division is one substantial food stop plus two shorter looks, adjusted to queues and appetite. On 28–29 November, simply remove City Hall and give the other two places more time. Those are editorial choices, not official guided-tour durations.
Use exact pins to keep the district names practical
The map separates Hakata Station, City Hall’s west square, Tenjin Central Park and Kihinkan. Use it to choose the operating venues closest to your route. The Japan comparison remains the place to decide between Fukuoka and other cities; this guide helps after Fukuoka is chosen.

Which venue should I choose if I have only an hour?
Within this selection, Hakata is the simplest choice if you are already near the station. If staying in Tenjin, choose the nearest operating venue instead of spending the hour transferring. One market with time to eat and return is more useful than several brief entrances.
Is all of Tenjin closed on 28 and 29 November?
No. The announced exception concerns the City Hall west Fureai Square. The park and Kihinkan have their own calendars. Build the plan around individually operating venues and recheck current notices; do not generalise one site’s closure to the whole district.
Can I still buy food when the lights are on at 23:00?
Not necessarily. Central Park and Kihinkan end their market hours at 22:00 even though illumination continues to midnight. Hakata and City Hall have later normal market hours, with their own exceptions and last orders. Light-viewing time is not a restaurant timetable.
Does a Kihinkan market visit include the building interior?
No. The Christmas destination here is the outdoor forecourt at Nishinakasu 6-29. Visiting inside the historic building is a separate activity with separate access conditions. Do not purchase or plan an interior visit on the basis of the market’s outdoor opening hours.
