December and January need different plans
For a Christmas-market trip, the essential window is 20 November–25 December 2026. The market’s Odori location and the Odori illumination finish at Christmas. A traveller arriving in January can still plan selected winter lights, but should not expect the same stalls to remain. Akapla and the station south square have published seasons through 14 March 2027. Those longer dates describe their own illumination venues, not an extension of the market.
Before choosing an evening, ask whether you mainly want food and gifts or a short view of lights. For the first, make the market your anchor; for the second, a station-side stop may be enough. Avoid booking an extra journey solely because the city’s overall winter campaign lasts longer. Also keep the February Snow Festival separate: a December Christmas programme is not evidence of snow sculptures or a February event layout.
Official pages were being updated during the October check, with some older descriptions still visible. Use the stated season dates, but do not carry over an old programme of performances, stall positions or special activities without a current announcement.
| Venue | Best fit | Planning constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Odori 2-chome market | Food, gifts and a Christmas-market atmosphere | 20 November–25 December 2026 |
| Odori 4-chome lights | A second outdoor stop near the market | Odori illumination also ends 25 December |
| Akapla / North 3 Plaza | A brief stop between station and centre | Scheduled through 14 March 2027 |
| Sapporo Station South Square | Lights close to the railway departure point | Scheduled through 14 March 2027 |
Munich Christmas Market — Odori Park 2-chome
Use Odori Park’s 2-chome block for the market shown on the official detailed venue map. The 2026 overview also mentions block 1, so follow current on-site signs and adjust your walk to snow or ice rather than relying on historic stall positions.
Take the subway to Odori. Exits 6 or 8 serve the neighbouring 3-chome block; exit 8 has an elevator. Cross to the market following current signs.
November 20–December 25, 2026. The 2026 overview includes Odori blocks 1 and 2; historical photos do not establish this year’s stall layout.
An Odori evening: market first, another block only if comfortable
Begin at Odori Station and choose the exit according to your needs. Exits 6 and 8 lead out beside 3-chome, with a lift at exit 8, for the market at 2-chome. The 2026 overview also includes 1-chome, so follow the current entrance signs instead of treating an old photograph as a stall map. Confirm the station facilities if a lift is essential.
Spend the main part of the outing where you actually want to shop or eat. If the surface is comfortable and the group still wants more lights, continue to the separate 4-chome stop, using crossings between blocks. Do not turn the walk into a competition to cover every chome. If the pavement is slippery or someone is tired, one market visit is a complete evening.
Make the return decision before ordering the last drink. Odori provides a practical end point without requiring a long exposed walk back to the railway station. A warm meal or pause indoors can be planned separately; do not assume that a market tent guarantees a seat whenever you arrive.
Sapporo White Illumination — Odori Park 4-chome
Make block 4 a separate light-walk stop from the Christmas market in block 2. Continue along the park only as pavement conditions allow; the historical panorama illustrates the park, not a promise of this year’s installation design.

Odori subway station exit 5 serves the 4-chome area. In snow or ice, allow extra walking time and use marked crossings between park blocks.
The Odori venue runs November 20–December 25, 2026. Other Sapporo light venues continue later; this park programme ends at Christmas.
A station-side route with underground travel between outdoor pauses
For an arrival or departure day, choose Sapporo Station South Square and Akapla. Start by orienting yourself at the station’s south side; the north exit is not this illumination venue. Akapla is the North 3 Plaza in front of the former Hokkaido government building, not a second name for Odori Park. Mark both places rather than relying on a city-centre pin.
The Chikaho underground pedestrian space connects the station and Odori area and can reduce the amount of exposed walking. For Akapla, the approach uses exits 2 or 4. Go outside for the actual square, then decide whether to continue towards Odori or return underground. The point is to break the evening into manageable outdoor sessions, not to claim that the illuminations can all be seen indoors.
Allow extra time for finding exits, taking off layers and collecting luggage. A short final stop near the station can fit a railway journey better than a market visit followed by a hurried return. Check your actual departure and platform; this article does not promise a fixed connection time.
Akapla — Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza
Akapla is the pedestrian plaza facing the red-brick former government building, separate from Odori Park. It suits a compact evening stop between the station and downtown; the daytime photo identifies the plaza rather than its seasonal lighting.

Use exits 2 or 4 from Sapporo’s underground pedestrian passage, Chi-Ka-Ho. Follow signs for Kita 3-jo Plaza and the former Hokkaido Government Office.
November 20, 2026–March 14, 2027. This plaza’s winter lighting runs longer than the Odori Christmas venue; confirm current switch-on hours before visiting.
Snow changes the route, not just the photograph
Snowfall is not guaranteed on a chosen date, and a snowy image does not tell you how the pavement will feel. Plan for cold and possibly wet or icy surfaces rather than expecting one ideal winter scene. Shoes with suitable grip, gloves that allow you to handle a ticket and a layer that can be adjusted indoors are practical considerations. Keep your hands available while walking instead of carrying multiple open drinks.
For children or anyone who tires quickly, agree on one outdoor highlight and one place to warm up. Station lifts, crossings and cleared paths matter more than the shortest line drawn on the map. Do not infer full step-free access from an underground connection: choose actual exits and reassess the surface on the day.
In poor conditions, shorten the itinerary to the most accessible intended stop. There is no need to force a four-stop loop because all four appear here. Check local transport and venue notices before leaving, keep the hotel address available and preserve enough battery to find the return route. Warmth and an easy exit are part of the experience, not wasted sightseeing time.
Sapporo Station — South Exit Square
Use the south forecourt for a short winter-light stop before or after a train. It is a distinct venue from Akapla and the Odori market, and station circulation must remain clear when taking photographs.

From JR Sapporo Station, use the west concourse’s south exit to the forecourt. The north exit leads to the opposite side and is not this lighting venue.
November 20, 2026–March 14, 2027. The historic winter photograph shows the south forecourt; the 2026 light design and operating hours should be checked in the current programme.
Food, photography and the difference between past and present
Choose whether the market food is a snack or the main meal before you start buying. Queues, seating and the wish to warm up indoors can change that decision. Prices and payment methods differ by stall and season, so do not build a budget from a cup visible in an old video. Keep spending on food and souvenirs separate from transport, and leave room for an indoor alternative if the group becomes cold.

Use the photographs and market video for the real setting, not as a forecast of 2026 decorations or crowd levels. Akapla’s daytime photograph shows the open plaza and its relationship to the former government building. The station photograph shows an earlier winter. All four stops remain geographically meaningful even when the temporary displays change.
For pictures, stop to the side and keep station entrances and pedestrian routes open. A short pause at one chosen composition is easier to fit around companions than repeated stops across every block. If the evening already includes good food and a memorable view, finish there. The station-side route and the Odori route can also be enjoyed on different evenings of the same stay.
Give each stop the time it needs
A market-focused evening can give roughly an hour to browsing and food at Odori, followed by a shorter look at the nearby lights and a warm indoor pause. Treat those as flexible planning blocks: a long food queue may use the time otherwise reserved for 4-chome, while an early arrival may leave room for more shopping. The point is to protect the part of the visit you came for.
A station-side evening has a different rhythm. See South Square, use the underground route towards Akapla, then choose dinner or the return to the train. It works particularly well when bags or a departure already shape the day. With two nights in Sapporo, separate these plans: Odori on one evening and the station-side lights on the other. You then get different settings without repeating the same long walk in the cold.
Use the city map, then return to the Japan comparison
The map distinguishes the four actual locations and their access notes. Use the country article to compare Sapporo with other Japanese cities, then use this guide for the evening within Sapporo. A separate visit elsewhere in Hokkaido should have its own travel day rather than being attached to this central walking plan.

Does the Christmas market continue in January?
No. The announced Odori market season ends on 25 December 2026. Akapla and Sapporo Station South Square continue as separate winter-illumination venues through 14 March 2027. Their later end dates do not extend the market or guarantee the same Christmas decorations.
Can the whole route be done underground?
No. Chikaho is useful for moving between the station and central area, but the four destinations are outdoor places. You must use the appropriate exits to see them. Underground travel can shorten exposure; it does not turn the market into an indoor attraction.
Which plan is easiest before catching a train?
A short station-south-square visit is the simplest option in this selection, with Akapla added only if you have enough time. Check luggage arrangements and the real departure first. Do not trade a comfortable connection for one more market stop across the centre.
Is snow guaranteed, and do all four stops need visiting?
Neither. Weather varies, and pavement conditions can make a short plan preferable. Choose the market for food and gifts or station-side lights for a brief winter view. One well-timed outdoor session with an indoor break can be more satisfying than completing a loop.
