The dates have an important late-December exception
Both markets open on 13 November 2026. Advent Basilica runs through 1 January 2027. At Vörösmarty, craft stalls finish on 28 December, before the New Year celebration. Do not book a late-December shopping visit on the assumption that all exhibitors remain until the final festivities.
Check the organisers' holiday hours for the actual day of your trip. In particular, Christmas Eve is not a normal full-length evening. A date range answers whether an event is in season; it does not tell you which stalls will be operating when you arrive.
Choose by the experience, not an overall winner
For a browsing-led visit, start at Vörösmarty Square and give yourself time to compare gifts before eating. For the basilica backdrop and light-painting programme, make Szent István Square the visual focus of your evening. Verify the current programme rather than relying on an old show timetable.
Neither choice requires making a claim that one market is always cheaper, less busy or more authentic. Look at posted prices and the actual stalls on the day. A modest purchase you like is a better souvenir than buying something because you feel obliged to complete a market checklist.
A flexible two-square evening
The two pins lie in central Pest, so plan this as a walking visit. Choose one square for your main meal and the other for a shorter browse; otherwise two queues and two food stops can consume the evening. Use the route as an order of stops, not as a precise walking-time promise.
Allow around two to three hours as an editorial starting point, extending it if you want a leisurely meal or the evening programme. Keep time for a warm indoor break and the journey back to your accommodation. If the first square is very busy, change the sequence instead of forcing your original plan.
After Christmas, decide what you are travelling for
If your main aim is crafts, Vörösmarty's 28 December cutoff is more useful than the headline New Year finish. If your trip falls later, check Advent Basilica's remaining programme and the specific activities at Vörösmarty before choosing.
Keep transport, food and shopping as separate budget lines. We do not use a fixed meal-price estimate or assume that photos from another season document the current stall layout. Save the official links with your booking so the final check is easy.

Vörösmarty Classic Xmas
Vörösmarty Square is the browsing anchor in this plan. Keep the craft-stall cutoff in mind when choosing a date, and avoid leaving gift shopping until the end of a post-Christmas stay.

Advent Bazilika
Advent Basilica takes place at Szent István Square. It is the second stop when the basilica setting is your evening priority. The market programme and admission to the basilica building are separate matters.

Can I walk between the two markets?
They are suitable for a paired central-Pest walking visit. Check an actual pedestrian route and allow for crowds; the planning diagram is not turn-by-turn navigation.
Are all Vörösmarty stalls open through New Year?
No. The organiser lists 28 December as the last day for craft exhibitors. Later festivities should not be treated as the same shopping offer.
