Three calendars, three different visits
Checked 14 October 2026: Vienna Tourist Board lists Stephansplatz for 6 November–26 December 2026, Rathausplatz for 13 November–26 December, and Schönbrunn for 6 November 2026–6 January 2027. Choose the market first, then book the travel day. If your only evening is 27 December, a city-centre market walk built around the first two will disappoint; Schönbrunn is the relevant option in this comparison.
An afternoon in the centre
Start at Stephansplatz for the cathedral setting, then walk through the centre towards Rathausplatz. Allow an afternoon and evening rather than treating the connecting walk as the whole visit. The first stop works well as a short introduction; keep the longer browsing and food stop for the town-hall area. This is an editorial sequence, not a timed tour or a guarantee of crowd conditions. Use the linked Place pages to check the two locations before leaving.
Keep Schönbrunn as its own outing
The palace market is outside the compact city-centre pair. Give it a separate block of time so that travel, food and shopping do not compete with a rushed return across Vienna. Visiting the market does not automatically mean you have booked a palace interior tour: check each attraction separately. For a two-evening trip, use one evening for the centre and the other for Schönbrunn; for one evening, choose the setting you most want to see.
Christmas Eve and January need different plans
The published 24 December hours are shorter: Rathausplatz 10:00–18:30, Stephansplatz 11:00–16:00 and Schönbrunn 10:00–16:00. Do not plan a late Christmas Eve market dinner around normal hours. The Rathausplatz ice rink is listed through 6 January, with 31 December closed, but that does not extend the market past 26 December. Recheck the official calendar before travelling; individual attractions and weather can affect the visit.
Places in this article

Wiener Christkindlmarkt am Rathausplatz
Rathausplatz is the longer stop in this central pairing. Its town-hall backdrop gives the market a different scale from the cathedral-side stalls. The accompanying photograph is archival and does not document the 2026 stall layout.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Stephansplatz
Stephansplatz is a useful starting point when your sightseeing already centres on the cathedral. Check its own closing time rather than assuming all Vienna markets follow Rathausplatz.

Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Schönbrunn
Schönbrunn is the choice here for a visit after 26 December. Separate the market plan from any palace admission, and leave space for the journey back to your accommodation.

Are Vienna's Christmas markets open in January?
Schönbrunn is listed until 6 January 2027. The Rathausplatz and Stephansplatz markets finish on 26 December 2026; a longer ice-rink season is a separate calendar.
Can I see all three in one evening?
It may be possible to pass through them, but we recommend the two central stops together and Schönbrunn separately. That leaves time to browse rather than spend the evening transferring.
