24–26 December: make it an early visit
On 24 December the market is scheduled for 09:00–15:00. On both 25 and 26 December it opens at 11:00 and closes at 18:00. That makes a Christmas Day visit possible, but not a late-night market dinner. Plan any restaurant meal and transport separately; these market hours do not confirm what the rest of the city will have open.
If your train arrives late on 24 December, moving the market to 25 December is more realistic than trying to catch the final few minutes. If you are leaving on 26 December, keep luggage collection and the journey to the station outside your browsing time. The shorter opening window should decide the order of the day’s activities.
27–30 December: a useful gap between the holidays
The organizer returns to the normal weekly timetable for 27–30 December. In 2026, Sunday 27 December is 09:00–20:30; Monday 28 through Wednesday 30 December are 10:00–20:30. Those evenings give you more flexibility than 25 or 26 December if you want both shopping and an after-dark look at the squares.
Choose a light plan: one pass through Domplatz, one through the adjoining Residenzplatz and time for a food or drink stop. These squares form the same main market, not two independent markets that require separate tickets. We suggest allowing around two hours for this compact visit, an editorial estimate that you can shorten or extend according to weather and interest.
31 December: late food does not mean late shopping
The New Year’s Eve schedule starts at 10:00. Merchandise stalls are listed as open until at least 18:00, while selected food stalls may continue until 01:00 on 1 January. Do your gift shopping before the evening cutoff instead of relying on the late catering hours. The organizer does not promise that every stall will stay open until 01:00.
Entry to the Christkindlmarkt is free, including New Year’s Eve, according to its official FAQ; food, drink and purchases are separate spending. If you want the New Year’s Eve atmosphere, check the event programme and your return transport close to the date. This guide does not guarantee performances, fireworks, weather or a last-minute seat at a restaurant.
1 January is the finish here; 6 January means another venue
On 1 January 2027 the main Christkindlmarkt is scheduled for 11:00–18:00, its final day. A January trip therefore needs an arrival early enough to use that window. Do not transfer a date you saw for another Salzburg market onto Domplatz and Residenzplatz.
In particular, Stern Advent and Winter Market in the Sternbräu courtyard is a separate event listed by Salzburg Tourism until 6 January 2027. Its later end date does not extend the main market. If travelling on 2–6 January, check that venue’s own current hours and location instead of following this article’s main-market pin. The distinction matters more than fitting another stop into an already short winter day.

Salzburger Christkindlmarkt am Dom- und Residenzplatz
Domplatz and Residenzplatz are the adjoining squares for Salzburg’s main Christkindlmarkt. Save this Place as your anchor and use the wider map to compare other cities that still have markets after Christmas. For a visit here, move between the two squares without treating each as a separate excursion. The photograph shows the real Domplatz market in December 2018; it illustrates the setting and is not evidence of 2026 decorations, current crowds or guaranteed snow. The Instagram posts below show earlier seasons; use the verified dates above when planning the 2026–27 season.

Is Salzburg Christmas Market open on 25 December 2026?
Yes. The main market at Domplatz and Residenzplatz lists 11:00–18:00 on both 25 and 26 December.
Can I shop at 23:00 on New Year’s Eve?
Do not rely on it. Merchandise is scheduled until at least 18:00; the later 01:00 finish concerns selected food stalls, not all shops.

No. Its 2026–27 season ends on 1 January at 18:00. The separate Stern Advent and Winter Market has a later end date.
Do I need an admission ticket on New Year’s Eve?
The organizer’s FAQ states that entry to the Christkindlmarkt is free, including New Year’s Eve. Purchases and food are not included.
